New C-arm Makes Minimally Invasive Surgery Possible at Lower Cost
July 5, 2010---GE has more than a century of tradition in unveiling its inventions at World Expos, and Shanghai 2010 is no exception. Last week at the Expo, GE Healthcare launched new high quality GE Healthcare imaging equipment that makes orthopedic minimally invasive surgery (MIS) possible at a lower cost. The Brivo OEC 850 is a surgical C-arm that offers superior image quality and uses some new technologies which can help reduce radiation ?offering the potential for greater protection for medical staff.

Sitting the global launch of the Brivo OEC 850 in China is a reflection of the anticipated market demand there.

"The expansion of MIS in China offers a great opportunity for C-arm growth in the coming years, and as a global leader in C-arms, we hope the Brivo OEC 850 will lead to improved healthcare quality in China and around the world," said Marcelo Mosci, president and CEO of GE Healthcare China. "Today's debut demonstrates GE's tradition of innovation. Informed by our healthymagination strategy, we will maintain our commitment to supporting China's medical reform and approach to long-term healthcare challenges."

Much of the demand stems from orthopedics and spinal surgery. A survey of more than 500 Chinese specialists revealed that the C-arm supported by their hospital administration was not capable of enabling minimally invasive procedures. The introduction of Brivo OEC 850 can increase the number of surgeons able to pursue MIS, which causes less patient morbidity, less blood loss and less hospitalization than open surgery.

Qiu Guixing, an academic at the China Academy of Science, praised GE Healthcare's leadership in healthcare innovation. "The surgery sector is in need of technological innovations that enhance overall performance. GE Healthcare's dedication in constantly bringing new, cutting-edge technologies to the sector is greatly valued."

In the US, there is also a significant need, but in a different clinical segment---pain management. In this case, physicians need a C-arm that can help them perform procedures at a cost reflecting the lower technical requirement, compared with other clinical specialties such as vascular surgery.

GE Healthcare Surgery is a market leader in intra-operative and interventional imaging products. The division's imaging products are integral to many fields including general surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, cardiology and GI, as well as for specialized procedures such as pain management. GE Healthcare prides itself on offering imaging products with superb image quality and dedicated technical and clinical support teams that ensure the products deliver optimal performance.
